Co-Occurring Disorders and Substance Use

What Are Co-Occurring Disorders?

Co-occurring disorders, often called dual diagnosis, occur when someone experiences both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition—such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder—at the same time. These conditions often interact with each other, making recovery more complex without the right care.

Why Integrated Treatment Matters

Treating only one condition while ignoring the other can leave individuals vulnerable to relapse or worsening symptoms. That’s why at Resa Treatment Center, we use an integrated approach that addresses both the addiction and the underlying mental health challenges together.

Our Co-Occurring Treatment Approach

  • Comprehensive Assessments: We identify all mental health and substance use issues early in the process.
  • Personalized Care Plans: Treatment plans combine group, individual, and family therapy, medication management (if needed), and support groups.
  • Therapeutic Support: Evidence-based therapies like CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed care help clients build coping skills for both conditions.
  • Ongoing Support: Recovery is a lifelong process, and we provide aftercare and resources to maintain progress.

The Goal of Co-Occurring Treatment

By treating the whole person—mind and body—we help clients break the cycle of addiction while improving mental health and overall quality of life.
Please Note: To be eligible for treatment, individuals must have a primary diagnosis of a substance use disorder.
